Introduction

Nearly 90 million Americans spend their days and even nights at their respective workplaces. Up until the 70's, there were no provisions as such for the protection of workers against workplace health and safety hazards. In 1970, the annual figures with regards to workplace hazards were these:
  • Workplace related hazards and accidents accounted for nearly 14,000 worker deaths per year.
  • More than 2.5 million workers have been reported to be disabled because of workplace hazards.
  • Ten times as many working days were lost from workplace related accidents and disabilities than from strikes.
  • The estimated new cases of occupational diseases is reported to be 300,000.
Based on these figures, the OSHA Act was created. The purpose of OSHA was to encourage employers as well as employees to reduce hazards at the workplace and to improve or implement safety and health programs.
