Introduction

Personal Protective Equipment, also known as PPE, is specifically designed to protect workers and employees from serious workplace related injuries or illnesses that may come about from direct or indirect contact with radiological, physical, chemical, mechanical or electrical workplace hazards.

OSHA intends to make it mandatory for employees to use PPE in order to reduce their exposure to hazards. Employers on the other hand are required to determine whether PPE is necessary and what kind of PPE is necessary to protect their workers.

In case PPE is being used, then a PPE program needs to be put into place. This program must address issues like the different types of hazards present, maintenance, selection and usage. Training of employees and constant monitoring of the program can help boost its effectiveness.

It is the employer's duty and responsibility to analyze the potential workplace hazards and if the need should arise, to provide Personal Protective Equipment to the employees.
