process safety management

Introduction

The Process Safety Management (PSM) Standard has been created to minimize or prevent the consequences of a catastrophic release of flammable, reactive, toxic, or explosive Highly Hazardous Chemicals from a process. In construction, a process is any kind of activity that includes the usage, storage, handling, manufacturing or on site movement of highly hazardous chemicals.

Unexpected releases of flammable, reactive, toxic or explosive liquids or gases in processes that involve highly hazardous chemicals have been reported for years in many industries using chemicals. In such cases, there is always a potential for accidents taking place if these processes are not properly controlled.
